Oral health is perhaps one of the most important parts of hygiene. Just one little sore tooth can cause some of the greatest amounts of pain in the human body. It's imperative to make sure that you have healthy teeth. As any dentist will tell you when you walk into his office, there are plenty of things that you may do on your own to ensure you don't run into any painful problems.

Perhaps the best thing about oral hygiene is the fact that it's relatively easy compared to other hygienic processes. The simplicity of caring for this area of your body has been made easy in this modern age, and advances in technology has made is extremely simple for problems to be remedied. Everyone knows that George Washington died of a toothache. To do so now would be a ridiculous notion. However, at one time there was no treatment and practical hygiene for human bodies was woefully lacking.

The first and most important thing you can do is brush. Do it as many time as you can. When you get up in the morning, after breakfast, use some anti-cavity and whitening toothpaste. Find a mouthwash that smells minty and rinse afterward. This will not only ensure protection against cavities, but it will give you great breath. Brush after every meal, if you can, and definitely before you go to bed each night.

Second, floss. Flossing is easy and extremely inexpensive. Floss sells for as little as ninety-nine cents per container. Simply wind the ends around each finger and remove the excess food from between each tooth. You'll be surprised how much you'll need it, and how keeping food from sitting there all day can prevent cavities.

Even more important than brushing and flossing is nutrition. Calcium is chief among these. If you don't have enough calcium within your body, you'll be liable to develop cavities - plus your bones can go soft. It's a common old piece of advice to "drink your milk". This is actually very legitimate, because without calcium, which is contained in milk, your bones will be weak and you'll find a mouth full of cavities even if you're engaging in perfect oral care otherwise.

If you're in a public place and cannot use a toothbrush after you consume food, try rinsing your mouth out with water. Also, any time you eat anything sweet - like hard candy or chocolate - rinse out your mouth as well. This keeps sugar from sitting on a tooth and literally absorbing into the plaque, causing a cavity. Pharmacies now sell portable toothbrushes, as well.
